Sonicare for Kids Review

This is a compensated review from BlogHer and Sonicare for Kids.

When I was asked to review Sonicare for Kids toothbrush , I decided I would ask my daughter, Kat to help. Mostly because her opinion is really what matters since this is a toothbrush designed for kids, and also, any excuse to get your kid writing and thinking is a good thing, right? Right. I'll let her first tell you in her own words what she thinks and then I'll give you my thoughts. These are her un-edited words:

I really love how it feels on my teeth, it feels like a massage. It's light and easy to use and it cleans really well. I love how it turns off when the two minutes are up because I don't have to guess if I've brushed my teeth long enough. I also love that it has a grip, it's really cool. I like that you can pick your own front. I really like the way it feels on my teeth. It's especially awesome how it plays a few musical notes when you have to start brushing a different section of your teeth or when it's going to turn off. It cleans my teeth really well.

So she's obviously sold. In all fairness, I think that kids (mine included) just aren't that objective, so I'll take a closer look.

At first glance, the Sonicare for Kids just looks fun. It comes with three different faceplates so your kid can basically design his/her own toothbrush. In our house, this was an immediate issue, my son wanted blue, my daughter wanted red. After a round of "guess what number I'm thinking of", all was fine again. If your kids are capable of sharing and compromising (mine totally aren't) or if you have an only child, this is a really cool thing. Usually when you're talking about an electric toothbrush, you're talking about white being the only color "choice", so I would imagine that the splash of color is really appealing to kids. I also thought that the grip of the toothbrush (bright red) just made the toothbrush LOOK a lot cooler (obviously it also is helpful for little hands to keep a better grip on the toothbrush). And let's face it, there's not that much about brushing your teeth that can be considered "cool".

The toothbrush came with 2 different sized heads, one for ages 4 and up and one for 7 and up. You can easily select which mode you want to use by sliding a switch, 4 and up setting is a lower setting, the 7 and up setting is a higher, more powerful setting. My daughter didn't use the 4 and up setting, but we did play around with it, and it seemed much less powerful than the 7 and up setting, which for tiny mouths seems like a good thing. I also appreciated that when the toothbrush is on, it automatically turns off after 2 minutes. I didn't even know that you were supposed to be brushing for 2 minutes, I'd always been taught that you brush for as long as it takes to sing the "Happy Birthday" song twice. I can tell you though, even after just 5 days, Kat's teeth just LOOK cleaner. I don't know if it's attributable to the toothbrush alone or the 2 minutes of brushing time, but I would imagine it's a combination of both.

Another cool feature was that the toothbrush played a little melody every few minutes as a reminder that it's time to switch brushing "zones". I didn't know what brushing zones were, but thankfully, there was a diagram included in the directions. Basically it's just the different parts of your teeth, (front, both sides, top, etc). As a mom, I find my self always asking, "did you brush long enough?" or "did you do a good job", with the Sonicare for Kids, I don't have to do that, I know that they have. I think that the music is a great way to get kids to focus on what they're doing so they really do a good job brushing.

The directions suggested charging for 24 hours before using, which we did. We haven't charged it since, and we're on day 5, so it would be great for traveling or if your kids are at all like mine and forget to charge things frequently. I really appreciated the little extra touches that were added to this toothbrush (the music, 2 minute-timer, changeable face-plates, etc.), it seems like Sonicare really went the extra mile in designing this toothbrush with kids (and parents) in mind.

I handled my kids dental hygiene by providing them with double dental insurance.

Now get to work!..;)

Well, since my little one is still fairly new (almost 4 months old), this hasn't been a huge concern yet. I do plan on talking to her pediatrician at her next appointment on how to appropriately take care of her "gums" until her teeth do come in. :) Love the sounds of this toothbrush though. Will keep it in mind for my daughter, and may even purchase some for my nephews! I think they'd love it.

I brush my kids' teeth twice a day and use kid flossers on them nightly.

My son's are older now and you still have to worry about dental hygiene but now you have the extra added problems associated with braces. I always have encouraged my kids to brush their teeth at least 2 times a day and more often if possible. Flossing is a must and limiting drinks with a lot of sugar.

From one mom to the next, you might want to check out Dentist.net They sell Sonicare - here is a 5% off code :D = Make5me

My kids are pretty good about brushing their teeth. I try and make sure they brush every day. Miss E. is a little better about it than her sisters

I use the sonicare. I think it is great that it is now offered for kids. It really does use a good job

My daughters are 6 and 5 and the rule is that they brush their teeth twice a day. In the morning, they get to do it themselves and in the evening, I do it for them. The dentist told us that kids can't effectively brush completely on their own until they are much older!

I have a Sonicare and am excited to see that they've introduced a children's version!

cute toothbrushes always seem to help with the chore, the ones with see through areas with floaty charms and glitter go over well!

we have the kids sing a song to each other, or buy cute fun toothbrushes that they would love!

I make sure they brush and "swish" w/ a flouride rinse twice per day...

I handle my son's dental hygiene by making sure he brushes his teeth both morning and night.

Unknown said...

It is hard. Brushing twice a day helps, but they also use agent cool blue to encourage brushing long enough to get things clean in there.

I bought toothbrushes that play a song so your child knows how long to brush.
That and regular dental visits!

We taught them to sing the "ABC Song" in their heads (slowly) while they brush their teeth. Then I always check their teeth after wards for any problem areas they may have missed. We also visit the dentist every 6 months for more thorough cleanings & dental exams.

I still brush my youngest ones' teeth (he's 15 months). But my 3 yr old, now that's another story. Usually, we have a bit of a struggle because he likes to play with the toothbrush and use it on everything but his mouth. Hopefully, this will get better.

I let my girls start off brushing their own teeth and then I come in at the end and get any spots they might have missed. Sounds like this toothbrush could make my life easier!

I got them cartoon character electric toothbrushes since it seems easier and funnier for them to enjoy brushing teeth ritual. But I got to admit that Sonicare sounds like a better option for my next purchase if I need to get them new ones. And of course, dental visit every six months!

I make sure they brush their teeth twice a day. They also floss and use mouthwash. I make sure they do that because I don't want them to have and breath.

They brush their teeth every morning and every night. I try to add a little incentive by buying toothbrushes they like (barbie, mickey, etc) and flavored toothpaste. It seems to make it a wee bit easier and more enjoyable.

We use character toothbrushes and timers!

My son (3 years old) is allowed to brush his own teeth, but he must let me "follow up". That way I'm letting him learn to clean them (he does pretty good), yet I know they are getting as clean as they need to be when I finish.

Linda Stewart said...

My girls are grown and handle their own dental care now. I do however have my grandsons living with me and they both love ‘tooth time’. Lil Man has his own special brush and toothpaste. He will brush for a while then I finish up for him. After he rinses he loves to smile really big and show his pearly whites. Lil Bit has just cut his first two teeth. Ever since he was born I would wash his gums with wash cloth but now that he has two front teeth I have a fingertip mini brush I use to brush those little teeth and we will slowly graduate him to a regular brush when he is older.

I find it's always helpful to make the process (whatever it is) as enjoyable as possible. In this case, good flavors of toothpaste and floss!

From day one, it has just been routine to brush in the morning and at night. No exceptions. This way, there is no battle over brushing, it's just the way it is! My kids at 5 and 7 now so they pretty much handle brushing themselves, but I still check to make sure they did a good job!

I let my 8 year old son brush his own teeth twice a day with a manual toothbrush and I check periodically to make sure he is actually doing it and doing it well. Ive been wishing for electric toothbrushes for both of us.

momznite said...

Hang in there parents of preschoolers - it does go smoother as they mature. We use a mini hourglass shaped timer for teeth brushing followed by floss and rinse. Twice a year I let the professionals critique and give pointers.

My husband and I both use sonic care, but I haven't gotten them for our little guys yet. (3.5) still doing their teeth by hand.

Ashley said...

My 10 month old has seven teeth, and it is all I can do to try to get a little baby toothbrush or washcloth in his mouth. He is so independent that I think he will really enjoy brushing, once he can do it himself!

We use an electric toothbrush as well, an Oral B because the smaller brushhead is easier to get into a three year olds mouth.

Lauren Wayne said...

We let our 2-year-old brush his own teeth in the morning to get some practice, and we talk him through how to do it right. At night, we do whatever it takes to get his teeth clean(ish). I've even brushed them in his sleep before!

Pain in the tushie though it is, I sit criss-cross applesauce (gag) on the floor while they lay back and I dry brush then floss - then they go brush at the sink with flouride toothpaste. We use regular cheap brushes because I change them about once a month.

Anna said...

I'd love to win one of these for my boys. We handle brushing by using one of those toothbrushes that blink for a minute while they brush (so that they will brush long enough). This sounds like an awesome brush!
